Yep – you’re going to have to do a first dance. It’s just one of those things that happens at weddings.

  • Embrace it. You will set the mood and tone for the dancing that follows. If you really go for it, throwing caution to the wind everyone will love it and this will carry over into the rest of the evening.
  • If you are going to perform a choreographed routine make sure you know it well enough so that you don’t have to count out loud whilst you’re dancing. There is simply no romance in that. In general choreographed routines don’t work very well becasue couples rarely know the dance well enough to pull it off. Having said that, if you can do it you’ll be the talk of the town and everyone will LOVE it.
  • If you intend to shuffle about to a slow number, no problem. Just look at each other, smile, laugh and enjoy the moment. A couple of spins and a dip at the end and you’re done. Looking all embarrassed and like you’d rather be elsewhere will just look embarrassing and make all your guests want to be elsewhere too.

I appreciate that, for some people, the first dance is a living hell but just remember that everyone present is on your team.
